Pedro Barahona is Associate Professor (since
November 1996) at the Departament of Computer Science of
the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon,
being the Head of Department since December 1999.
He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from
the University of Manchester (June 1987), having started his academic career in
1978, just after graduating in Electronic Engineering from Instituto Superior
Técnico of Lisbon (July 1977). Meanwhile, he was granted an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Manchester
(October 1984).
His main research topic is Constraint
Programming, and the wide area of Artificial Intelligence, namely in the application
of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, presenting regularly the result of his
research in various scientific conferences and publications in these
areas.
To support this research, he has been
responsible or participated in a number of projects, both national and international, developed in
research centres and scientific associations of which he is a member. He has organised and/or collaborated in the
organisation of many scientific events, being
the editor of several books and participated in the evaluation of
scientific papers.
In his teaching activity, he has been
responsible for various courses, at graduate level,
specially in Computer Science, as weel post-graduate, namely in Computer Science and Applied Artificial
Intelligence. He has supervised several
M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, and been a member of the jury of many post-graduate
examinations.
He has also taken several management activities, both in university institutions and
scientific associations.
