Thirty five years of technological advances have enabled tremendous change in science and society. It is fair to ask whether statistical data analysis has kept pace with these advances. We argue that it has not, and fear that we risk falling even farther behind. We discuss both the mechanisms that have contributed to putting us in this uncomfortable position and what the field might do to regain control of its destiny.
