About CENTRIA

Organisation

CENTRIA is not organized into formal subgroups with leaders, but by topical areas, each researcher being free to liaise with one or more areas at any one time, and change liasions as time goes by.
Each topical area designates an interface person for administrative purposes to facilitate organization and communication with the board of directors (cf. below for the formal organization).
There exists an external international advisory committee of four nominated by the Centre.

You may find here a collection of slides with the presentation of CENTRIA. You may also find here the information made available in the last Evaluation session of CENTRIA (January 2008).

A summary of CENTRIA organization, according to its formal statutes approved by the University follows:

Members

The CENTRIA is composed of effective members and associated members. Effective members are researchers in Artificial Intelligence and related topics, with a Ph.D. degree and that were either founders or have been subsequently accepted as effective members of CENTRIA. Associated members are temporary collaborators of the former, even when holding a Ph.D., whilst working in research activities of the CENTRIA.

The CENTRIA is governed by a Scientific Committee and a Board of Directors.

Scientific Committee

The Scientific Committee is composed of all the effective members of CENTRIA and its functions are:
  1. to elect and dismiss the Director and the Executive Council;
  2. to appreciate and approve the budgets and plans of activities submitted by the Board;
  3. to deliberate on the effective membership of non-UNL members;
  4. to deliberate on any other matters not under the scope of the Board of Directors;
  5. to alter the statutes;
  6. to decide on external institutional collaboration.

Board of Directors

The CENTRIA is led by a Board of Directors, presided by a Director. The Director is a senior researcher elected by the Scientific Committee among its members for a mandate of 3 years. The other members of the Board are 3 additional senior researchers, also elected among the Scientific Commision also for 3 years.

The Board of Directors submits to the Scientific Committee:
  1. the budgets and multi-yearly general plans of activities;
  2. a report on the activity and accounts of the past year;
  3. the collaboration with external entities;
  4. proposal of admission of non-UNL members.
In its more executive role, it must
  1. approve the concrete activities proposed by CENTRIA's effective members, and admission of their collaborators;
  2. appreciate and decide on the admission of new UNL effective members.
In addition to coordinating the Board, the Director
  1. represents CENTRIA externally;
  2. deliberates, if necessary with the other members of the Board, on the daily matters concerning the Centre.
